Wisconsin monster non-typical

September 22, 2009 at 09:10 AM

Here we are just weeks into the archery deer season in the U.S. and we’ve already got a buck being touted as a possible record. This time the record reportedly in jeopardy is the non-typical archery record for Wisconsin.

At present, reports say the Wisconsin archery record for a non-typical whitetail rack is 233, scored on a 16-point buck taken in Buffalo County.

That may change based on the buck shot on Sept. 21 by Wayne Schumacher of Fond du Lac. The Deer and Deer Hunting Web site says the buck is a 27-pointer. There are also reports in newspapers and other media sources that the buck was a 30-pointer. Click here to read reports by the Appleton Post Crescent and to see more pictures and a video.

Various newspaper reports have listed the buck’s possible green score at 251 inches before deductions, but there’s no statement from an official measurer that I’ve seen yet. Said Schumacher:

“It’s so hard to believe,” Schumacher said, noting he’s hunted with bow and gun for more than 30 years. “I had known people had seen it in the area but I had no idea (it was nearby).”

Here is an Associated Press story on the buck.

Fond du Lac resident bags 30-point buck

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) - A Fond du Lac resident bagged a 30-point whitetail buck by bow.

Wayne Schumacher shot the deer Sunday night from a tree stand near Rosendale.

Schumacher says the shot covered about 15 yards and the deer ran about 60 or 70 yards before going down.

Schumacher noted he’s hunted with bow and gun for more than 30 years and he’s known people who have seen the buck but it was hard to believe.

The deer, referred to as “Lucky Buck,” has an inside antler spread of 20½ inches. Its field-dressed weight was about 225 pounds. Estimates are that the deer is at least 4½ years old.

Schumacher says the memory will be preserved with a shoulder mount.
