Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Will they gobble in the morning?

April 13, 2008 at 08:31 PM

My alarm is set for 3:19 a.m. I’ve got two Diet Mountain Dews in the truck chilling. New Power Pleat camo in the shed. My turkey vest is stocked with calls, a face mask and mis-matched gloves (as always). There’s a full choke in the shotgun. Boots ready. Camera ready. Basically, I’m as prepared as I can be. But are the turkeys? After days of cold, rain and wind, will they gobble in the morning?

The popular theory right now among North Zone hunters I’ve been talking to is that the gobblers are ready to bust loose in the morning with some serious gobbling as soon as the sun shines and it starts to warm up. Only thing is, it’s not going to really warm up until later in the week. So we head off into the great unknown in a few hours hoping.

We hope they will gobble in the tree and then again on the ground.

We hope they did not roost near any hens.

We hope the ticks are few and far between.

We hope the alarm goes off.

We hope the morning to come will be as memorable as so many mornings in the turkey woods before.

Isn’t another opening day wonderful?

And good luck to everyone. Please forward your success stories (with pictures) to us here at Prairie State Outdoors.
