Jeff Lampe

Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Knox County deer entered in Illinois’ Big Buck Recognition Program from 2004-07. Only Richland and McLean counties have more with 24 each.

Most does contest

The Peoria County Farm Bureau is again sponsoring a most-does-taken contest this deer hunting season. Winner will be the person who checks in the most does taken in Peoria County between Oct. 1 and Dec. 19.

William McKown of Brimfield won last year with nine does.

Prizes are $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third for Farm Bureau members ($100 less per place for non-members). Farm Bureau memberships are $10. There will also be two random $50 drawings.

Hunters must enter by Sept. 30. Call (309) 686-7070.

Dam regulations

Legal fishing would change dramatically at the Bernadotte dam on the Spoon River if the Department of Natural Resources adopts a proposed administrative rule change.

Under 17 Illinois Administrative Code 3703, an exclusion zone would be established 300 feet upstream and 50 feet downstream of 31 dams. Nobody would be allowed to enter that area by foot, boat or any other means. Violators could be charged with a Class A misdemeanor.

Visit dnr.state.il.us/legal/rule-status.htm to learn more. Comments will be accepted through Oct. 20.

Hunting, fishing days

Next weekend marks Illinois’ annual celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Days. Events are scheduled for Saturday and next Sunday, Sept. 28 at Silver Springs State Park in Yorkville and John A. Logan College in Carterville. Visit sihfd.org or huntingandfishingdays.org to learn more.

The Illinois Audubon Society was founded in 1897 and is the state’s oldest private conservation organization.

You speak

“Here is something for Mrs. Lampe to consider when admiring the waving grasses and flowers in our ditches.

“Thousands of people must travel our highways to go to and from work. All of whom would like to make it to and from in one piece. That means being able to see the animals running out in front of their cars. ”

Fergie returning

Cubs Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins had so much fun hunting in central Illinois last winter that he’s returning to once again headline the Independent Sportsman Club’s Wild Game Feed on Jan. 24 in Kickapoo. Joining Jenkins will be Lee Smith, Ozzie Virgil Jr. and possibly a few other well-known athletes.

Kudos corner

Mike Reed, 18, of Pekin fished his way to a spot in The Bass Federation national championship next March at Bull Shoals Lake in Missouri. Reed advances to the FLW-sponsored event as a co-angler after placing second among Illinois team members Sept. 12 on Lake St. Clair. Scott McIntyre of Decatur topped Illinois anglers.
