Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Hunting-related accidents in Illinois last year. Two were fatalities.

You speak

“A little over a week ago I’m out on my deck just before dusk. All of a sudden there was a crash of branches and twigs. I look 20 yards down the hillside and a coyote has a deer by the neck.

“The deer was running trying to shake him off. Still holding on, the coyote let loose the wildest growl I’ve ever heard. A couple minutes later the deer was dead.

“The deer was 1 to 2 years old and at least twice the size of the coyote. I thought I was watching Marlin Perkins’ ‘Wild Kingdom.’ I live off of Knoxville, just north of Mossville Road.”

— Tim Grawey, Peoria

Outdoors answers

Q: “A lot of us would like to know what kind of shape the state’s sunflower fields are in. With the spring rains, no one is sure.”
— Earl Byard, Bartonville

A: We ran an item on July 9 noting that a moist summer has not been good for sunflowers. Banner Marsh and Snakeden Hollow both reported poor fields.
Better flowers can be found at Double T and Jim Edgar-Panther Creek. We’ll have a complete rundown on conditions on Aug. 29.
