Number of immature giant Canada geese per adult goose in west-central Illinois this spring — a 22 percent increase from 2008.

Duck data positive

Duck hunters gained more good news this week on several fronts.

For Illinois hunters one bit of positive press is that the September teal season will again be 16 days. And all signs point to another 60-day regular duck season, though that won’t be official until after the Flyway Council meets July 18-24 in Wisconsin.

Surveys by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department showed 4 million spring breeding ducks, up 18 percent from last year. Pintails and all dabbling ducks showed gains while divers were down slightly.

Equally important, the pond count was eighth-highest on record and was up 293 percent from last year. Water conditions are much improved in the rest of the Prairie Pothole Region of South Dakota, Montana, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Archery ministry

Vermont Christian Church has a unique new ministry called Centershot. The aim of the program is to teach archery skills and the Gospel at the same time.

As a fund-raiser, record-holding archer Randy Oitker of Plainville will give shooting demonstrations and seminars Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at
the Schuyler County Fairgrounds in Rushville. There will also be an auction of bows, deer stands and other items.

Cost is $10 (12 and under admitted free) and all proceeds benefit the church’s archery program. Call (309) 221-0363 or 313-3783.

The black bass slam

A group from Bassmaster magazine spent last week attempting to complete what they are calling The black BASS Slam — catching one fish from each of the eight members of the black bass family.

The eight black bass species are: northern largemouth, Florida largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, shoal, redeye, Guadalupe and Suwanee.

Click here to learn more or to submit your own Black BASS Slam, which can be completed between this Wednesday and July 1, 2010. Everyone who completes a slam will receive a certificate and will have their picture printed in Bassmaster magazine.

Q: “Do you know the date for the spearing of Asian carp at Bath?”
— David Cook

A: We don’t know of a spearing contest, but the ever-popular Bath Redneck Fishing Tournament will be Friday and Saturday.

The schedule calls for two heats of fishing on Friday and Saturday, from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. both days. Competitors try to boat as many Asian carp as possible using only landing nets. Cost is $50 per boat.

There is also a youth tournament Saturday from 9-10 a.m. for youngsters age 2-12 and the Little Miss and Master Redneck contest for youths age 2-7 is at 10:30 a.m.

Bands play both days and there is food available. Admission is $2.

Boat Tavern owner Betty DeFord is again running the event. To learn more visit or call (309) 546-2545.

This ‘n that

The federal estimate of the Illinois dove harvest in 2008 was 683,000, down from 912,000 in 2007. “I would guess the reason is we had really nasty weather during nesting season,” Illinois biologist Ray Marshalla said. ... Powerton Lake will be closed July 20-22 for annual levee maintenance and repair. The lake will reopen July 23 at 6 a.m.
