Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Camping question

Camping season is almost here and with that in mind, we want to know about your favorite piece of gear. What’s the one item you won’t go camping without? What piece of gear makes your time outdoors better?

E-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with your answers by Monday. Please include your mailing address. Why? To sweeten the pot, three readers will win Camp Stove Toasters courtesy of Coghlan’s Ltd., the camping supplier which turns 50 this Thursday.

Norm Coghlan founded his company in 1959 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Since then, Coghlan’s (http://www.coghlans.com) has sold more than 7 million Camp Stove Toasters. The family owned company also sells 450 other camping items and is the leading outdoor accessory supplier in the the U.S. and Canada.

Turkeys on the move

While it’s fun to see flocks of turkeys in the fall and winter, you can’t count on seeing those birds in the same places in the spring.

“The more contiguous habitat you have the less they are going to move,” said Paul Shelton, Illinois forest wildlife biologist. “But a hen may nest several miles from places she frequented prior to the nesting season.”

Prep fishing policy

As more high school fishing teams wet a line this spring, more coaches are calling in results.

While we are very supportive of the new state fishing tournament, we don’t have space to run winners of every outing. We will print the top three finishers and big bass from any tournaments involving three or more teams. And we plan full coverage of the April 24 sectionals and the first state finals, May 8-9 at Carlyle Lake.

Bureau Co. bear news

The Bureau County black bear didn’t wind up at Niabi Zoo after all. Instead, the bear that roamed Bureau County last June through February before being tranquilized and trapped was shipped to Woody’s Menagerie in Bond County.

From there, owner Gregg Woody said the bear has been shipped to “another facility.” Woody said the bear was “a handful” while he had him at his facility near Mulberry Grove.

Biological samples were taken from the bear for testing to determine if the bear was wild or captive-bred. There is no word on results from those tests.
