Jeff Lampe

Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Teardrop trailer promo

Do you own a home-made teardrop trailer like the one pictured above? The Central Illinois Recreational Show is offering you a chance to win money March 5-7 at Peoria’s Civic Center.

Promoter Denny Johnston is seeking homemade teardrop trailers for his show. Call (309) 692-6465. Show visitors can vote for their favorite, with the winner earning $300 and second place worth $200. Teardrops evolved after World War II and many were built with surplus materials, including wheels from jeeps salvaged from sunken ships.

Powerton boat opener

Anglers in search of open water finally have somewhere to launch on Monday when Powerton Lake opens to boats. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fishing for blue cats has been good of late, with Asian carp among the favorited baits. White bass, hybrid stripers and smallmouth bass have slowed in the hot-water discharge. That said, this is typically a good time to find those species elsewhere.

IHSA bass sectionals

Assignments for the Illinois High School Association bass tournament are out and Peoria area teams will head to Argyle Lake, Banner Marsh, Evergreen Lake and LaSalle Lake. Click here to read all sectional assignments.

Overall 231 of 700 IHSA schools signed up to fish, 33 more than last year when 2,496 students fished. Sectionals are April 23 and the finals are at Carlyle Lake on May 7-8.

Fishing at Banner Marsh are Limestone, Canton, IVC, Dunlap, East Peoria, Elmwood, Farmington, Illini Bluffs, Pekin, Peoria Christian, Richwoods, Woodruff and Tremont. Fishing at Evergreen Lake are Eureka, Deer Creek-Mackinaw, Metamora, Fieldcrest, Morton, Roanoke-Benson, Midland, Lowpoint-Washburn and Washington. Astoria, Cuba, Galva, Knoxville, West Prairie are at Argyle Lake and Bureau Valley fishes at LaSalle Lake.

Elsewhere, Alabama will hold a high school club series this March, but other states have been slow to embrace prep fishing.

Waterfowl talk

A chance to learn about aerial inventories of waterfowl along the Illinois River comes Saturday (Feb. 20) at 10 a.m. at Dickson Mounds Museum. Waterfowl ecologist Aaron Yetter will discuss the inventories that have been done since the late Frank Bellrose started them in the 1940s.
