Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Staging a bass photo shoot

May 14, 2008 at 06:58 AM

Getting a great picture of an angler with a big fish is not easy. For one thing, big fish seem to prefer being caught when there’s no camera around. Then too, it’s hard to capture the moment of catching a big fish in a typical grip-and-grin shot. So many of the pictures you see in fishing magazines (and occasionally even newspaper articles) are staged. Some are more staged than others. Last week in Mississippi, we got a chance to watch guide Roger Stegall (pictured above at right) pose for some pictures taken by John Neporadny (pictured above helping Stegall get a bait properly positioned in the mouth of a fish), who writes for a variety of publications about bass fishing.

A few things to point out about all this. First, the fish were caught at Pickwick Lake within a day of when they had their picture taken. Second, the fish were later released. So no lunkers were harmed in the shooting of these pictures. If anybody had to pay the price it was Stegall, who was put through the paces. But as a veteran guide and a member of the Strike King pro staff, he knows that photo shoots are just a part of doing business. And at least he has a little fun in the process, as you can tell from this short video clip.
