Snagging starts slowly

July 11, 2008 at 10:17 AM

There is good news finally for Asian carp snaggers in the Peoria area. The Peoria Lock and Dam, up for only four days this spring and summer, went back up on Wednesday as planned.

There to greet the wicket dam that evening was Joe “Photo Joe” Egli of South Pekin. One of the area’s most devoted snaggers, Photo Joe has been itching to get out all summer. So he didn’t waste a minute. Unfortunately, all he snagged was “four little ones.” That’s not good snagging folks.

But it’s no wonder. Give things another week or so and Asian carp should start massing below the dam. Once they get there in big numbers, the snagging will get very good.

Snagging below Peoria Lock and Dam is legal year-round, so long as you are within 300 yards of the dam. Snaggers are asked to release any gamefish they accidentally snag. And please send me any reports of big paddlefish you might encounter. I’m betting spoonbills will be showing up again in force this summer after all that flooding.

Here’s a picture from last June of Photo Joe (from left to right), John Regina of Peru and Don Goertzen of Peoria with some big bigheads, including a 38-pounder. Give things a few weeks and we’ll start seeing fish like this again.
