Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Illinois hunting and fishing

Rain or no rain, fish are active

April 27, 2009 at 12:41 PM

Anyone sitting home waiting for nice weather to go fishing is making a mistake. If I didn’t have to paint the back hall to get ready for the oldest’s first communion I would be out there fishing (as it is I already have to go mushrooming while the ceiling dries, there’s only so much one bum can do in a day).

Gordon Inskeep called this morning to tell me bass were spawning at the clear, deep strip-mine lake at the Hanna City Sportsman’s Club. He actually saw them spawning. And I have noticed lots more fish up along the shorelines in clear lakes near us over the weekend.

And on Saturday, the boys even caught fish. First came a bass on Victor’s pink spinnerbait Illinois hunting and fishing(which he reclaimed after its very successful outing at Emiquon). Then Henry caught a nice 12-inch crappie. Then more crappie. Then more bass.

By the end of the afternoon we even caught some bass on Senkos. Nothing big. Mostly males. But the point is, fish are active and biting. Warmer weather is here. So while it may be raining and gloomy, the fish don’t mind. The water is warmer. That’s the key for them. The spawn is coming. And you need to be out fishing when you can be, rain or no rain.
