Pelicans, pelicans everywhere

April 01, 2008 at 06:54 AM

My sister-in-law Beth looked out behind her house the other day and no doubt thought April Fool’s Day had arrived early. Having recently moved into a house with a great view of a shallow basin of Lake Decatur, she’s been treated to a steady stream of birds and critters since October. Geese, deer, seagulls, coots and ducks are all part of her everyday life. So are the two mangy old wolf-looking dogs that eat goose droppings.

But pelicans, well she couldn’t imagine those big-billed birds belonged here. The other day she sent this picture and said, “We think this is a little strange for Decatur. Is this usual?”

Yep. Everywhere you go in Illinois, pelicans are becoming more and more common. This all started about 10 years ago and has been growing ever since. Along the Illinois River pelicans are a way of life in the spring and fall. Same is starting to be true along the Mississippi River. And obviously, the same is true on Lake Decatur.

Myself, I enjoy watching them circling overhead. And so long as they don’t show up at any of my favorite farm ponds or strip mine lakes, I’m OK with them visiting.
