Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

How busy is today? So busy that an unedited version of this entry has already appeared. Here’s the proper entry, courtesy of you fine readers. I’m still scrambling and trying to recover from two long trips to Mississippi in the same week. That and the sudden onslaught of baseball season. So help me.

FROM Roger Woodcock of Farmington:

“Enjoyed last Friday’s article. I found your five favorite lures interesting, but everyone is going have their own “go-to” baits. My choices would be:

  • 1. Mepps No. 3 Spinner, silver blade/white tail
  • 2. Berkley Power Worm, 7-inch purple
  • 3. Rapala Original Floating Minnow, No. 11 silver with black back
  • 4. Rattling Jig, black/blue with No. 11 Uncle Josh Pork Frog - black/blue
  • 5. Bomber Model A Crankbait, chartreuse crawdad

These baits will do it all from ice out until ice up. Surface, deep or in between depending on the time of the fishing season. These are also what I consider “oldies but goodies” classic baits. My No. 1 is the Mepps because in the spring and fall it is deadly not only on bass, but crappie as well.”

FROM Steve O’Neill of Pekin, who has waterfowl hunting pits west of Canton near MSD:

“If someone was looking to find a new waterfowl pit location they could call me at (309) 347-9658.”
