Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

This turkey hunting is killing me. Literally. Physically. Mentally. Can you help me?

FROM Don Axt of Peoria:

“I counted 28 swans at Banner Marsh last week (there are probably more). Those 28 could make up 14 pair. If each pair produced only 6 surviving cygnets ... that could be a lot of swans! In another four or five years Banner might well be levee to Route 24 swans!”

FROM Bryan Sanders of Effingham, who runs the Web site http://www.huntingpins.com :

“A few years ago I started a hobby making deer and turkey pins for folks around our area. Some of us hunters were having trouble finding the DNR pins because of the new distribution system. It worked out great for everyone and the demand has been growing at a rapid rate. Recently, we learned that the Illinois DNR is planning to quit giving pins away. This was confirmed to us at the Illinois Deer & Turkey expo this year. We had a booth near the IDNR and I had the pleasure to meet with Tracy Schafer and others who informed us of the IDNR’s plans. My hope is that we can carry on the tradition of having pins available for years to come. We are also expanding the idea to include custom pins, fishing pins and other game species.”

FROM Kevin Patton of Washington, who runs http://www.ilfishing.com :
“Please note that April 30, 2008 is the deadline to participate in the St. Jude Fundraiser being sponsored by ILFishing.com. Details can be viewed at: http://www.ilfishing.com/stjude/index.html This is a great way to advertise your business or group to tens of thousands of Illinois fishermen at the same time that you help fight childhood cancer.”
