Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

May 6: Picture of the Day

May 06, 2010 at 02:09 PM

What a morning. Gobbles all over. And then a red head peaking up over the top of a grassy hill. The sun was literally shining right through the gobbler’s head.

And then a click out of my gun. A click when I pulled the trigger.

So I yelled to Quad Cities outdoor scribe Bob Groene (pictured above at left), “You’re going to have to shoot him.”

Bang. Dead gobbler. Big celebration with Berryville, Ark. resident Chad Wilson (above at right), who was kind enough to guide us and call for us today.

Later, Bob—ever the nice guy—said he thought I was letting him shoot because the turkey was out of the range of my 3-inch gun. I could have gone along with that and said I knew his 3.5-inch gun would do a better job at 44 yards. But I’m a truthful guy. Painfully truthful when it comes to turkeys.

So I came clean, just as I am now.

I would never had guessed that. Hey, I patterned the gun on Wednesday and it performed fine.

But now the bolt is jammed closed and I’m ready to toss the gun into the scrap heap.

At least Groene got the bird, which had a nice 11.25-inch beard and spurs of almost 1 inch each.

And Wilson is a great guy. It was fun to hunt with them both. But I’m sure I will hear that click tonight when I close my eyes.
