Kodi the tree-climbing dog

February 03, 2008 at 03:19 AM

Over the past 15 years of hunting I’ve spent time around plenty of dogs. Big dogs, little dogs, good dogs, bad dogs and every combination in between. But last weekend marked a first.

Though the highlight of the hunt was supposed to be rubbing elbows with Ferguson Jenkins and Ozzie Virgil Jr., the most current celebrity of the bunch was actually Kodi, an 8-year-old English setter belonging to Pat Tully of Washington. While Fergie Jenkins is still known all over the U.S. as a pitcher, Kodi the Wonder Dog is known all over the world for her skill climbing trees.

According to Tully, his little setter has a knack for climbing spruce trees in their Washington yard. She smells birds up in the trees, starts climbing and will actually point birds while up in the air. If this all sounds a bit unbelievable, click here to see video of Kodi in action.

Tully says this video and others like it have been broadcast across the country. And he recently hosted a crew from Korea that spent three days in Washington shooting video of Kodi in action.

While I’ve never personally seen Tully’s dog perform in a tree, I can tell you she’s good at finding pheasants on the ground. Good enough that I inquired about pups. Tully expects a litter some time next year.

Anyway, here is Kodi, having her hunting vest autographed by Ozzie Virgil.

Here is the vest, with signatures of both Virgil and Fergie Jenkins.
