Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

July 6: Picture of the Day

July 06, 2010 at 03:14 PM

What better day to pay a visit to Rice Lake and Banner Marsh than today, the historic first meeting of the Friends of Rice Lake. (Or the Friends of Rice Lake Properties, as our volunteer group is now known after a noon gathering at Presley’s Outdoors.)

With an hour to kill before today’s meeting, I visited both Rice Lake and the Bell’s Landing side of Banner Marsh. There was much more to photograph at Banner Marsh, which is always filled with critters.

Most cooperative today was this family of mute swans, though the gander (who was wearing a neck band) did hiss and chase after me when I got too close.

Pretty much the entire time I watched them the young swans were busy grubbing through submerged vegetation. Every now and then they would pull up a chunk of weeds, then move on to another spot.

While that could someday prove problematic, for now their impact is fairly minimal. It’s a big marsh, after all.

And for me, the presence of swans and all the other critters at Banner Marsh provide yet another reason to work for the betterment of this site as a member of Friends of Rice Lake Properties. Stay tuned for more details soon on the group, which will raise funds and provide much-needed political clout for Rice Lake, Banner Marsh and the Double T Goose Management Area.
