Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Great birdwatching Web site

January 01, 2008 at 11:16 AM

One of our unrealized goals here at Prairie State Outdoors has been to create a top-notch birdwatching information source for Illinois. While we’ve accomplished that in hunting and are working towards that goal in fishing, we’ve fallen short on the birding side. Part of that is because we haven’t had the page views for our birding information.

But part of that reason is also because Matthew Fletcher has already created the same thing. Click here to view his cool Web site. Here is Fletcher’s explanation of how his site evolved.

“I started this site in February this year after running a blog for a couple of years. The blog format (using Google’s Blogger) was a little too restrictive so I took the plunge into setting up a website. I still have a long way to go to get it to be the resource I want it to be but I am happy that I can publish a wide range of media from pictures to videos. The site is entirely non-profit—but it doesn’t cost a lot to run if you exclude the camera equipment I use!

“I have not attempted to promote my site anywhere but do have a decent number of regular visitors. Feedback is important for me so I can provide content that’s my visitors feel is valuable. Many people arrive at the site through web searches. The bottom line for me is that I enjoy getting out there and sharing my sightings and if I can help create a useful resource for Illinois birders, I will consider I’ve achieved my goal.”

In my book, he’s already accomplished that goal. Basically what he’s done is what we had hoped to accomplish. More power to Matthew.

So take time to check out http://www.birdsillinois.com for a wide variety of birding information.
