Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Granberg lifts DNR gag rule

February 02, 2009 at 06:25 PM

In recent years there has been a dumb gag rule instituted on employees in the Department of Natural Resources.

The gag rule was dumb because it put DNR staffers into the unenviable position of breaking a rule simply by answering questions to which they knew the answers.

Today in a welcome move, Director Kurt Granberg has lifted the gag rule. Here is is his memo today to DNR staff:

As I look forward to working with you in serving our many constituencies of the IDNR, I would like to ask your cooperation as we try to do a better job of letting those constituents know of the good work you are doing.  Even in tough times, there are many good things going on and good news to share with the public.

As a result of my recent discussions with some of our constituency groups, and with outdoor writers and other members of the media, I want to encourage you and/or your designees to make every effort to cooperate with them.  For example, the outdoor writers are keys to keeping those who enjoy the outdoors informed of all of the great opportunities we offer in Illinois.  Make sure you and your office staffs attempt to answer their questions and get them the information they need without having to seek various levels of approval.  I will assume responsibility for this action.  As always, please keep our communications managers informed.

I also plan to work in conjunction with the Illinois Conservation Foundation to reinstitute an annual Outdoor Writers Conference that is one way in which you and your staffs can share information on managing our natural resources and promoting outdoor recreation.

I was pleased to hear and read Governor Quinn’s remarks encouraging more openness and freedom of information with our citizens.  We need to do the same here at the IDNR.  If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.

Thank you,

Acting Director Kurt Granberg
