Fun in the Gulf

September 16, 2009 at 04:07 PM

Nobody got sick. Everybody caught fish. And generally speaking, we all had a good time today during a deep-sea fishing trip offshore of Gulf Shores, Alabama.

We were fishing with Capt. Ben Fairey (pictured above chilling out after out trip) aboard the 62-foot Necessity charter boat that he runs. I felt right at home when he told us the $1.2-million boatIllinois hunting and fishing was powered by twin 800 hp Cat diesel engines (one of which is pictured at right).

And while the seas were just 2-4 feet, I was happy to have a big boat. For a first-time deep-sea angler, that was just enough chop to make the trip interesting. The ride was bumpy but not stomach-upsetting. While this was my first deep-sea trip, I was very comfortable—so much so that I ate Frito Scoops aboard with no fear of seeing them again.

We didn’t catch huge fish (I did manage a 10-12 pound snapper that gave me all I wanted) and we battled some rain and cut our trip a bit short. But it was a ball. The fishing was fast and very frantic. More than I expected, to tell you the truth.

I’m just going to slam up some pictures of our trip and will come back with more details and pictures in the days to come. Today wrapped up my first trip to the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores area of Alabama and based on what I’ve seen and experienced, I’ll gladly come back.
