Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Duck turnout down along river

August 01, 2008 at 08:38 AM

The lack of food at several sites and the lack of a levee at Sanganois no doubt contributed to a drop in attendance for several state waterfowl areas during last weekend’s duck-blind drawings.

As expected, Woodford topped last Sunday’s duck-blind drawings with a crowd of 1,294 — up nearly 200 from past drawings. The private clubs around Woodford all have good food, which would explain the attendance.

The only other site showing a gain was Spring Lake, which with 294 participants nearly doubled its total of 152 one year ago. The addition of the Spring Lake Bottoms Unit near Spring Lake has boosted hunting there.

But attendance was down at other sites, most notably Anderson Lake where the crowd of 511 was about 300 below normal. Totals were down slightly at Rice Lake (1,143), Sanganois (1,063) and Marshall (270).

Hunters who did not attend the Anderson drawing may live to regret that decision. Not long after the drawing was completed, Carlson Lake was aerial seeded with millet. If the river stays out of Carlson for the next few months, and if staff can repair a levee breach there to keep fall floods out, Carlson could still wind up with a fair amount of duck food.
