Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

August 5: Picture of the Day

August 05, 2010 at 09:51 PM

Every year around this time I start getting excited at seeing so many doves. The prolific birds seem to be everywhere. On wires. In fields. In parking lots. At feeders. On fences. They are everywhere.

But seeing lots of doves on Aug. 6 does not always translate to seeing lots of doves on Sept. 1, when hunting season opens.

This year brings new optimism. They’re going to stick around.

Sure I’ve been seeing large flocks of doves already. Sure that seems early. If temperatures stay warm and we can avoid a cold rain, the birds will stay I say that’s going to happen.

Or is it. As I type this, my wife is opening windows in the house for the first time in weeks. The air is off. The breeze is coming in, cool and refreshing. “It’s going to get down to 60 degrees tonight,” she says.

Maybe they won’t stick around.

And so the mental debate will rage until early on Sept. 1, as the Farmer and I crouch in a field of foxtail, wondering.

NOTE: This was originally posted as the August 6, 2010 Picture of the Day. That was because it was posted late in the evening on August 5, long after I had forgotten what day it actually was. The photo is also stored as the August 6 picture, but was actually taken August 5.
