Are your turkeys gobbling?

April 11, 2009 at 10:27 AM

Spent this morning scouring the spot I will be turkey hunting this spring and did not hear a single gobble all morning.

Driving out, I was fretting about the lack of noise, when I saw turkeys everywhere. Within one mile of the woods I will hunt were two different large groups of birds, say 10-15 in each bunch (including the birds pictured above). I’m not real optimistic those birds will be split up by Monday, when my first season hunt starts. Seems like they’ve been in the same general area for the past few weeks and have shown little inclination to move much. But who knows, maybe a few days of warmer weather will get the hens moving and the gobblers gobbling. And maybe the start of the season will split them up.

Most of the other hunters I’ve talked to in central Illinois are saying they hear birds on the roost early and then don’t hear much at all once the gobblers hit the ground. Then again, another buddy I just talked to said the birds in his woods were “hammering” from 6:30 until well after 7 a.m. Hmmm.

What’s the gobbling report in your neck of the woods?
