April 9: Picture of the Day

April 09, 2010 at 05:09 PM

With little time for clicking this morning (after running through a bean field in pursuit of a gobbler), I snapped some pictures of a few egrets in a strip-mine lake near Wildlife Prairie State Park. Given time, they would have been good subjects, since they were a pair on their territory. But I didn’t have time so I hastily snapped a few pictures and headed off.

Then at work, Journal Star photographer David Zalaznik showed me a close-up shot he had taken of a cattle egret. Real tight picture. Real nice Made my shots look horrible. So naturally, I had to scramble.

After leaving work I hustled to a park near the Illinois River. It’s a secluded little park. When I pulled up, there was one wormy-looking guy in a car there with his window open. He winked at me. I don’t think it was an accident that he winked.

But I didn’t have time to worry about that. I needed a picture. So I ignored him and walked into the park.

There I found the definition of an urban goose: a gander posed in front of graffiti. As it turns out, I kind of like this picture. But as I worked to get a better shot, the gander got mad. Then he got real mad, hissing and raising and lowering his head. No doubt his mate is on a nest nearby. Anyway, the gander ended up chasing me all the way back to my truck. Fortunately the winking guy was gone.

But it did make me stop and think: this is Day 5 of a supposed 365-day project. Yikes.

No question this project will kill me.
