An albino turkey and other gobbler talk

March 12, 2008 at 07:34 AM

Gobblers are gobbling. Full strutters are strutting. So say turkey hunters all over Illinois, as those big black birds are eliciting more and more interest of late.

With turkey season just a few weeks away here in Illinois, hunters tired of cabin fever are eager for a reason to get back out into the woods.

Perfect timing, then, for Thursday’s Late Show with David Letterman, which features the 2008 Wild Turkey/NWTF national gobbling champions: champion Stephan Richardson of Springdale, Ark.; second-place finisher Doug Benefield of Newnan, Ga. and third-place finisher Scott Wilhelm of Chippewa Falls, Wis.

Perfect timing also for a note from Mike Steffa from Evergreen Lake. Steffa must have a new camera, because he’s been clicking pictures like mad this spring. His latest features a flock of turkeys near Evergreen that includes an albino. E-mailed Steffa:

“I had the day off yesterday and went looking for wildlife, and came across three flocks (two big ones) of turkeys. The second flock had an albino turkey in it, and no it’s not a domestic turkey, this is a true albino. I’ve gotten a good look at this bird a few times, but didn’t have a camera with me. This time I had a camera, and although they are not the greatest pictures, I thought you might enjoy these.”

I enjoyed them. Maybe you will too. If nothing else, it will get you as fired up as the gobblers.
