A 12 o’clock tail makes my heart sing

December 18, 2008 at 04:02 PM

It’s been a tough upland season for me and the dog in terms of quail.

Pheasants, we’ve pointed and shot plenty. But quail have been tough this year.

So it was very nice this morning to walk up over a snow-covered ridge and see Hawkeye on point, all puffed up and with his tail straight in the air. Perfect form. Or as perfect as he can approximate. Lately he’s been pointing with a very low tail, which is no big deal to me. On Tuesday he even pointed with a low tail that was also crooked. Again, no big deal since we shot the pheasant.

But there’s still nothing like seeing a pointing dog with its tail reaching skyward. Of course I forgot the camera. Oh well. At least I was able to shoot two of the quail the dog was pointing. They were in a perfect spot: along a creek, near a corn field, in some grass that also had overhead multiflora rose, weeds and even a few scrub trees. In that spot they’d be safe from hawks, warm, with food in close range and easy escape routes to avoid coyotes. Since the covey was small (just eight birds) I will probably leave them be for the rest of the season. But at least they gave us a thrill today.
