Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Canton Lake crappie still strong

April 14, 2008 at 06:45 AM

Here is the latest installment of Flathead’s Picture of the Week. Department of Natural Resources furbearer biologist Bob Bluett hoists a pair of crappie netted from Canton Lake on Thursday, April 10, 2008, during an annual trapnet survey of the lake. The larger of the fish was 16.5 inches long and weighed 2.9 pounds. Good numbers of crappie from 10-12 inches were also netted, explaining why this is a prime crappie-fishing destination for Canton-area anglers this spring.

Flathead reminds anglers that while the lake is open to the public, boaters are required to purchase a boat sticker from the city of Canton.

Flathead’s picture of the week

April 07, 2008 at 09:16 AM

Man, you guys sure get bargains here at Prairie State Outdoors. Seems like we’re adding something new for free every week. The latest addition is called: Flathead’s Picture of the Week. The plan is to post a picture each Monday here on the Scattershooting Web log. Photos will come courtesy of fish biologist Rob Hilsabeck, who promises to send regular pictures each week of things he sees while running nets, sampling ponds and generally roaming around central Illinois. Apparently he recently obtained a camera. Judging by the above picture, he knows how to work the thing.

The first entry, above, shows fellow biologist Ken Russell holding a 44-inch muskie netted out of Wheel Lake at Banner Marsh. Stay tuned for more.
