Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. A muskie from Double T

July 01, 2008 at 09:29 AM

Flathead didn’t have a great week taking pictures, so he offers this submission instead for Flathead’s Picture of the Week.

Illinois Outdoors

This is Jessica Sacco of Dunlap with a 32-inch muskie she caught in the past few days at the Double T State Fish and Wildlife Area in Fulton County. The fish hit on a 5-inch Fat Wiley with 40 feet of line out according to her father, Jeff Sacco.

Snoozing at Lake Shelbyville

June 09, 2008 at 10:54 AM

Illinois Outdoors

Flathead’s Picture of the Week features five sleeping youngsters (all 7 or under) taking a break while on a Lake Shelbyville fishing trip with Grandpa Joe. The youngsters enjoyed good fishing, with crappie actively spawning in flooded grass at the back of coves. Flathead said, “the size ratio of the crappie was about 70 percent under 10 inches and 30 percent over 10 inches.” Finding flooded areas at Lake Shelbyville will be easier this week, as the lake is rising rapidly and (barring any more rain) is expected to crest on Thursday.

Orange-spotted sunfish a beauty

June 02, 2008 at 11:15 PM

Tropical fish have nothing over at least two Illinois sunfish: the longeared sunfish and the above orange-spotted sunfish, which is the subject of Flathead’s Picture of the Week. Here’s his cutline for this latest photograph. “What a pretty fish. I could not pick my favorite picture. This male orange spotted sunfish was sampled at Anderson Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area. The orange spotted sunfish is common in several of the local backwater areas of the Illinois River in central Illinois. Banner Marsh, Rice Lake, Anderson Lake and most of the backwater areas that have an area of sand or gravel will have spawning orange spots right now. Not much to eat! A large orange spotted sunfish will be only 4 inches long. What it lacks in size, it definelty makes up with the beautiful colors of the male during the spawning season.”

Amen to that. Who could believe such a beautiful fish could be found in muddy old Rice Lake.

A pretty bedding bluegill

May 26, 2008 at 02:53 AM

Flathead’s Picture of the Week is this pretty bluegill that was getting ready to spawn last week in Lake Victoria at Snakeden Hollow State Fish and Wildlife Area. Writes Flathead: “Electrofishing surveys at several of the small walk-in lakes at Snakeden Hollow found very nice bluegills up to 9 inches, black crappie up to 11 inches and some very large redear sunfish up to 12 inches long. The crappie were actively spawning and the bluegill and redear were looking for the right spot to start.
