Jeff Lampe

Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

June 24: Picture of the Day

June 24, 2010 at 09:37 PM

In a discussion with the new Illinois grasslands biologist Mike Wefer, one point of good news we agreed on was that rabbit numbers look good this year.

Whatever the wet spring may have done to hurt nesting by pheasants, turkeys and quail, it didn’t seem to hurt rabbits any.

Anecdotal evidence from all over the state seems to back up the claim that rabbits had a good hatch this spring.

Here’s hoping that carries through to this fall. For years now, Chef Todd has been begging me for rabbits in the fall. This is the year I’m going to deliver.
