Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

June 18: Picture of the Day

June 18, 2010 at 03:32 PM

Raspberry season is here, but there’s still plenty of time to pick fruit based on this morning’s ramble through the brambles.

I picked enough to fill a small bowl in just a few minutes, but berry ripeness varied markedly in the Peoria County patch I sampled. Most clusters were still in need of a few more days of aging. Typically only the middle berry in a bunch was ready for picking and a few plants still had blooming flowers.

Much riper were mulberries, which I ate happily. Lots of people seem to look down on mulberries, including my eye doctor Lori Sarver who said, “I thought those were only for birds.” Birds or me, I guess. Hey, if it’s free, I’ll eat it.

And while raspberries are not yet at their peak in central Illinois, insects appear close to their annoying worst. Man, they bit the heck out of me this morning. So along with your berry buckets, be sure to bring some bug spray.
