Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

April 29: Picture of the Day

April 29, 2010 at 10:54 AM

The record pace for corn planting in Illinois continues, with 73 percent of the crop in across the state through Monday.

Corn planting is far ahead of last year’s 4 percent total at this point and is in an all-time state record pace.

Next best year was 2005 when 67 percent of the corn was planted.

Hmmm. Seems to me 2005 held another state record. Yep. Best deer harvest ever. That total of 201,210 has never been surpassed despite more permits and seasons now available to hunters.

Barring a wet fall —and if the whitetail herd is healthy—there’s no reason hunters should not be able to replicate similar numbers this deer season.

I’m betting by Monday we’ll see 85 percent of corn planted, as farmers are working hard today to finish planting before rain arrives.

Around us, the little sprouts are just starting to emerge. With them comes hope for a venison-filled fall.
