Jeff Lampe

Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

April 17: Picture of the Day

April 17, 2010 at 09:56 PM

People sometimes tell me I am lucky to have such an understanding wife. Generally, I think those people make a mountain out of a molehill.

But this evening, I kind of understood their point.

After a full day of soccer and mowing, we had a babysitter and were headed for a night out. There was only one hold-up between leaving the house and eating out. I needed a picture.

“You realize,” she said, “you don’t have to do this.”

She was right in the sense that nobody at work would dock my pay if we didn’t have a Picture of the Day. But in another sense she was very wrong. Doing a job well often has nothing to do with the boss.

So as she drove slowly along and I eyeballed lakes, reeds and woods for critters, we finally stumbled across a few coots. This one, running off with a piece of grass in its mouth, offered the best chance to get to dinner and keep my wife happy. And to fulfill a silly picture quest that ultimately matters only to me.
