Close enough to hear the turd fall

April 15, 2009 at 09:27 PM

Yep. I got close enough to the gobblers this morning on the roost to hear the droppings hit the ground.

Too close, I realize. But it’s a long story given the layout of area I’m hunting. Hindsight being what it is, I now realize I should have canoed across the lake to a point a few hundred yards of the gobblers and then walked in from the west under cover of darkness and set up a ways away. Instead, I went around the lake, got too close (since they were roosted right on the edge of the lake) and 20 minutes later watched three gobblers fly right over my head, across the lake and toward my truck. They didn’t spook, but I think they were suspicious. One buddy said I should have Mooed like a cow. I’ll remember that in a few hours when I try again.

Hope your turkey season is going better than mine. So far the gobbles have been furious from about 5:45 to 6:30 a.m. and then nothing. Maybe that’s just where I’m hunting. And maybe some warmer weather will loosen the vocal cords.

Outside my misfortune, I think today was a good one for many hunters. I heard of lots of gobblers being shot around Peoria. I’m guessing by this time next week I’ll be flooded with turkey pictures. Sure hope one of them is my own.
