Why I love Iowa

November 08, 2008 at 11:08 PM

At some point this afternoon, Iowa was busy upsetting Penn State in a college football game.

Which has nothing at all to do with why I love the Hawkeye State. Because at the same time the Hawkeyes were winning, my buddy Springer and I were also winning. We had wandered into the Lampe Marsh in norhtwest Iowa on a 30-degree day with 30 mph winds and had no idea what to expect.

After seeing 25 or more pheasants and shooting three of those birds in the high winds, my love for our neighbor state only intensified. There are birds in Iowa. And grass. I guess there’s even a football team here. Not that I care.

After leaving the private Lampe Marsh, we ventured into a public area filled with grass and open to hunting on a come-as-you-want basis. We saw birds again. I saw four hens and one rooster (far off). Springer saw a few hens and two roosters, including one at close range. He can explain why he missed. The point is, there’s grass here and birds here. And that’s why I love it here.
