Need to catch up after a day of helping net northern pike. Well, that’s a bit of a lie. I want to go fishing this afternoon. So feel free to take over.

FROM Herb Unkrich of Edwards:

“(Bluebirds) are around, but none are starting to build yet. I have gotten a couple of sparrows. Some bluebirds stay all winter. When cleaning out the nest boxes a few weeks ago I found several boxes with black droppings. That is bluebirds staying in there. Sparrows leave white droppings.”

FROM Brian Efnor of Farmington:

“Have you ever been to the National Trapper’s Association convention. It is held every summer in August and it moves locations each year. This year it is in Mason City, Iowa. My family and have been going for two years now, and just love it. Illinois OutdoorsEven my wife, the animal lover goes and enjoys every minute of it.  We first went to Hutchinson, Kansas two years ago.  I was simply amazed by all the equipment, people, seminars and of course the smells.

“I always save my recyclables all year long, then I have enough money in August to buy all the equipment I need at the convention. The best part of doing it that way is, you can get a dozen traps for about 25-50 percent less than you would ordering it or buying it from a store. Also, there are a lot of items you can’t find at stores that you may have an interest in or just find kind of novel. Last year in Goshen, Ind. we saw an elephant trap that was made by the Duke Trap Co. I added a picture of this trap and my daughter Avery (at right). Next year, the convention is in Lima, Ohio. The NTA will be celebrating it’s 50th Anniversary, so it should be a real blowout.”
