Jeff Lampe has been outdoor writer at the Journal Star in Peoria for 12 duck seasons. He lives in Elmwood with his wife Monica, sons Henry, Victor and Walter, and Llewellin setter Hawkeye. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he is an avid fan of the Bills and still has mental scars from four consecutive Super Bowl losses. Outside of hunting and fishing, Lampe's main passion in Illinois was Class A boys basketball (which sadly no longer exists). Former publisher of the Class A Weekly newsletter, Lampe is a co-author of "100 Years of Madness" and "Classical Madness," both books focusing on prep basketball in Illinois.

Cool mallard tracking Web site

March 11, 2008 at 09:06 PM

Want to follow mallards as they migrate north? Want to see as birds pass through Illinois?

Click here to check out a cool Web site that lets you do just that. The site is posted by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. No offense, but can you imagine the Illinois Department of Natural Resources sponsoring something like this in its current state?

Pictures to ponder as you buy gas

March 11, 2008 at 06:24 AM

Every now and then while I am pumping more money into the gas tank, I think back to these pictures. Former Department of Natural Resources editor and writer Gary Thomas forwarded me these pictures in January of 2006. But I saved them. They just seem to drive home a certain point. To think, at the time I first received these I was mad that gas was going for $2.39 per gallon. Ahh the good old days.

Anyway, as the story goes, this engineering marvel was built in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.
