Quail quest underway

December 29, 2007 at 10:26 PM

OK, since one of my resolutions for 2008 is to shoot a limit of wild quail in one day, I figured it was time to get cracking today.

This evening I took the dog out for a two-hour run to see if we could find a few new coveys. Bingo. Two spots, two decent-sized coveys. There were enough birds that with perfect shooting I could have sacked up some meat. As it was I wound up with two quail and left several birds for another day. That’s good, since I’m planning to spend an entire day soon trying to shoot a limit.

If all this sounds comical, please understand that limits of quail are no longer easy to come by. But it’s not impossible. Not at all, not even in Peoria County. So some day in the next few weeks Hawk and I plan to spend an entire day chasing quail. If the dog performs like he did today (six points, puffed up, tail high and leg lifted on two) it will be a great day. If my shooting does not improve, the idea of a limit is out of the question.

But I’ve had two five-bird days this year (both coming in under two hours) so I’m still optimistic. We’ll keep you posted. I even plan to shoot video of the event, which should just about guarantee the birds will all end up missing.

Incidentally, scenting conditions today were fantastic, as the dog was able to track birds with relative ease. Very fun to watch.
