The rut is on in Illinois

October 31, 2007 at 01:41 PM

Halloween is here and that means two things here in central Illinois: candy and rutting whitetail deer.

In the past few days bowhunters have been reporting greatly increased big buck activity. Bucks are chasing does. Bucks are fighting. Bucks are rubbing trees. Bucks are being hit by cars and trucks. One hunter even reported watching a buck breed a doe on Tuesday.

With all that going on, it should come as no surprise that bowhunters are also shooting their share of bucks.

Two good ones shot in the past two days include the picture above of Brad Hattermann of Peoria with an 18-pointer from Peoria County. He shot the buck on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007 in the evening after watching the deer shred a few trees and fight off another 10-point buck. We’ll have a complete story on this one Sunday. It’s an unusual story, trust me. Hattermann also had sheds or partial sheds from the same buck from 2003, 2004 and 2005. He didn’t find any last year or this year and assume the big deer was a goner.

The picture below is of Jeff Bernitt of Metamora with a 16-pointer he shot in Woodford County, also in the evening, on Monday, Oct. 29, 2007. More about that deer later, as well. Until then, get out and see if you can’t get a buck yourself.
