PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A smallmouth bass pulled from Horseshoe Lake in northeastern South Dakota last month is a state record.

The Game, Fish and Parks Department says the 7 pound fish was caught by Derek Valnes of Brandon. It topped the previous record of 6 pounds, 9 ounces. That fish was pulled from Lake Poinsett in 2008.

Valnes' bass was 21 1/2 inches long and had a girth of 18 inches. It marks the 19th time the state record smallmouth bass has been bested.
