The 2013 Illinois fall trout fishing season opens Saturday at 43 ponds and lakes throughout the state.

About 75,000 trout were stocked by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources just before the opening of the fall trout season.

In Springfield, the pond at Southwind Park and the upper pond at Washington Park were stocked Tuesday morning.

Bob Wheeler of Crystal Lake Fisheries of Ava, Mo., along with DNR fisheries biologists, stocked 146 fish in Washington Park, weighing a total of 138 pounds.

At Southwind Park, 822 fish weighing 785 pounds were stocked.

The Illinois catchable trout program is funded entirely by those who use the program through the sale of inland trout stamps.

No trout may be taken from any of the stocked sites until the fall trout season opens at 5 a.m. Saturday.

Anglers must have a fishing license and an inland trout stamp, unless they are under the age of 16, blind or disabled, or are Illinois residents on leave from active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces.

The daily catch limit for each angler is five trout.
