Youth programs designed to get young people outdoors and trapping will be the focal point of the upcoming state convention in Carlyle.

The Illinois Trappers Association will hold its annual convention at the Clinton County Fairgrounds Oct. 4 – 5.

Gates open at 8 a.m. Oct. 4.

“This year we are going to offer a tour of our youth trapping area at Carlyle Lake,” said Mike Gragert, president of the Illinois Trappers Association.

The 10-acre area is dedicated for youth trapping only.

“It is only 10 acres, but it adjoins other (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property that is open to trapping),” he said. “I don’t know any other association in the United States that has worked with the Corps to create an opportunity like this.”

The area includes a variety of habitats including a beaver pond.

“It will offer kids a chance to get their feet wet,” he said.

Trapping and fur handling demonstrations also are planned.

Kids 18 and under can sign up for the Illinois Trappers Education course to be offered Oct. 5.
