Police find alligator in central Illinois basement

April 11, 2013 at 11:14 PM
BLOOMINGTON -- Police in central Illinois seized a nearly 3 1/2-foot-long alligator from a home in Bloomington.

Illinois Conservation Police say officers took the alligator on Thursday. Officers found the alligator in an enclosure in the house's basement. Authorities say police received information that someone was keeping the alligator in the home illegally.

Illinois Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez says police will try to relocate the alligator to a more suitable home where trained professionals can care for it.

Danny Hubbs, 44, was cited for unlawful possession of a protected species without a permit. Authorities say the misdemeanor violates the Illinois Endangered Species Protection Act. A man who answered a call to a phone listing for Hubbs said he no longer was employed at the location.
