Ducks remain in the Illinois and Mississippi River valleys in above average numbers.

The latest Illinois Natural History Survey aerial inventory conducted by Aaron Yetter found a total of 354,195 ducks at 23 sites along the Illinois River.

More than half of those were mallards.

The total is well above the 10-year average of 228,321.

Ducks were fairly evenly distributed among sites surveyed with Crane Lake at the Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area holding the most ducks with 62,300.

At 16 sites along the Mississippi River, Yetter tallied 355,265 ducks, above the 10-year average of 311,484.
