Bucks and does put on a show

Deer hunters wait most of the year for that short window of time when the rut is on.

The peak of deer breeding season is here, and bucks and does are putting on a show for hunters and wildlife watchers.

Motorists should watch out, too, because deer-vehicle accidents rise when the rut is on.

The first weekend of the traditional firearm deer-hunting season starts Friday.

Here are the remaining Illinois deer hunting season dates:

Nov. 16 - 18 and Nov. 29 - Dec. 2: Traditional firearm deer season

Dec. 7 – 9: Muzzleloader deer season (muzzleloaders also allowed Nov. 29 – Dec. 2)

Dec. 27 - 30 and Jan. 18 – 20: Late-winter and CWD seasons in select counties.

Those visiting state parks and recreation areas during firearm season are advised to check with site offices to see if portions of the park are closed during firearm hunting.
