WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) — A northern Illinois man who died after he hit a gate while snowmobiling was legally drunk when the accident happened.

Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey on Tuesday said Shane Diaz’s blood alcohol reading was more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 at the time of Friday’s accident.

Authorities say Diaz died of trauma to the upper body and neck when he hit a cable gate while snowmobiling on Lake County Forest Preserve property. The Volo man was wearing a helmet when he and another rider went off a marked trail in the Lakewood Forest Preserve.

The other rider wasn’t hurt.
