Illinois deer hunters killed a preliminary total of 181,411 deer during all segments of the 2011 - 2012 deer season that concluded Jan. 15.

The total includes all deer taken during youth, archery, firearm, muzzleloader, late-winter and chronic wasting disease seasons.

Results were almost identical to 2010 – 2011 when deer hunters killed 182,270 deer in all seasons.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has been trying to reduce the Illinois deer herd in an effort to cut down on the number of deer-vehicle accidents.

DNR forest wildlife program manager Paul Shelton said deer population levels “in many parts of the state are more in keeping with population goals.”

The record deer harvest in Illinois occurred in 2005 - 2006 when 201,209 deer were taken.
