Canoe outings planned to highlight Sangamon Valley watershed conservation efforts

The Friends of the Sangamon Valley is planning a pair of canoe trips to acquaint people with area waterways and highlight conservation efforts in the region.

Sangamon River Float

On Aug. 20, a canoe float from Riverside Park in Springfield to the Illinois 29 bridge will be held on the Sangamon River.

Meet at Riverside Park by 8 a.m.

Vehicles will be shuttled to the take-out area and the trip will begin by 8:30 a.m.

This is a three to four hour trip. Bring a sack lunch or a small cooler.

Sugar Creek Tour

On Sept. 3, we’ll canoe from the Sugar Creek Covered Bridge to Glenwood Woods, ending at Bridgeview Park. 

Meet at Bridgeview Park at 8 a.m. 

Shuttle to Covered Bridge Park and be on the water by 8:30 am. 

Stops are planned to view natural features of Glenwood Woods.

Take-out is planned for noon to 1 p.m.

A hot dog cookout lunch will follow. 

Grills will be available; feel free to bring your own meat or meat substitute.

All paddlers should have their own water, food and dry storage for themselves. 

Dress appropriately. 

You may get wet.

Canoe trip cost is $30 per person, $50 per couple. 

Reservations are required since there is limited space for these tours. 

Shuttle drivers also needed.
