NASHVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Officials in the southern Illinois city of Nashville are trying to figure out what killed hundreds of fish in a pond in a public park.

Residents began noticing the dead fish Friday in the 12-acre pond that’s a popular fishing spot in Nashville’s Memorial Park. That site also is home to the Washington County city’s yearly Spring Fishing Derby.

Many are speculating the intense summer heat that’s baked the region might be to blame, although others worry that something may have been dumped into the water.
