Big Fish Fridays: Huge redear

Only after he caught and released this huge redear sunfish did John McKinty start pondering whether he might have had his hands on a state record.

No question, the 12-inch redear McKinty caught in early May out of a rural Knox County farm pond was huge.

The fish weighed 2.5 pounds and was 2.5 inches thick.

But was it a record?

Nope. That title belongs to a 2-pound, 12.3-ounce redear caught by Mike DeMattei on Sept. 7, 1985 out of the Marion Country Club Lake in Williamson County.

But given that McKinty released his fish, there’s always a chance the record could fall late this fall or even next year. Only time will tell.
