Ice fishing clinic Feb. 6

Mother Nature hasn’t always cooperated with the Coon Creek Casters for the club’s annual kids ice-fishing clinic.

Some years the event was canceled because of thin ice.

That doesn’t appear to be the case for this year’s clinic set for Feb. 6, barring an unexpected spell of warm weather.

The ponds at Belvidere’s Spencer Park had 9 inches of ice as of this week.

The free event is a great way to introduce kids to ice fishing because the club stocks several hundred 15-inch brown trout, and there’s a good chance the young anglers will catch fish.

The event starts with an instructional session at 9 a.m., followed by fishing until noon, when a free hot lunch is served.

The clinic is limited to 250 kids, and registration is required. For additional information or to register, call 815-547-7935.
