Big buck down ... with a recurve

November 17, 2008 at 03:49 PM

Every hunting season provides us with a few favorite big buck stories.

My top candidate for 2008 arrived via e-mail this weekend. The story focuses on Jim Eveland of rural Mattoon, a 73-year-old bowhunter who shot a monster 14-point Coles County buck on Nov. 8.

The deer itself is awesome. I’m still trying to track down some scoring details, but the thing is wide, massive and gorgeous in my book.

And it’s also awesome that Eveland is a 73-year-old is still out hunting regularly.

Another one of the things I really like about this tale is that Eveland still hunts with a recurve bow and tries to stay fairly traditional.

Mind you, there’s nothing wrong with keeping up with modern equipment. It’s just neat to read about an old-school hunter. And then to see a buck like this ... amazing.
